A great Victorian thespian’s cherished dream of a one-man Command Performance collapses into comic chaos when he discovers that the theatre management has set him up.

The Great Shakespeare Showdown in Silver City is a joyous romp that sees famed English actor Sir Charles Goodknight forced into an onstage duel against firebrand all-American actress Harriet Twelvetrees to see who knows the Bard best.

It won’t be six-shooters that decide the winner – but Shakespeare quotes, insults, and sonnets.

Taking place in the Opera House in the Shakespeare-mad mining community of Leadville, Colorado, the winner will be crowned The Wild West’s Best Bard of 1882.

Officiating on stage – and attempting to keep the actors from coming to blows – is Billy the Miner, who may not be much of a reader but has a boundless knowledge of the Bard.

The actors even compete to see which can do the most and best death scenes – cue the last gasps of Mercutio, Juliet, Julius Caesar, Pyramus and Laertes.

And all dignity is lost as their attempts to outdo each other see a moving moment from A Midsummer Night’s Dreamdescend into fisticuffs.

The Great Shakespeare Showdown is fast and fun, with lots of chances for the audience to show off their knowledge by shouting out the names of the plays being quoted

How about these:

“Life is but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets it’s hour upon the stage and is heard no more”

“Could great men thunder, as Jove himself does, Jove would ne’er be quiet for every pelting petty officer would use his heaven for thunder.”

“What hast thou done? Thou hast mistaken quite and laid the love juice on some true-love’s sight.”

Dennis Elkins’ new play is a light-hearted delight but is built on a real but lesser known aspect of Wild West history – the fascination for Shakespeare among the settlers, even illiterate ones who could quote whole passages. During the silver rush in Colorado many of the mines were even named after Shakespeare plays or characters.

Such was the level of knowledge that actors had to be incredibly careful not to misquote or the audiences would shout out a correction.
